This play is a look into the lives of teenage girls in a juvenile detention centre, their fights, friendships and their dreams beyond the walls of the prison. When a new girl, Sophie, arrives, she inspires the girls to put on a play – Beauty and the Beast. We see the girls work together, or not work together, under Jade’s direction. They all want to be better people, even if that feeling is somewhere deep down.

After their devising last term, in which everyone played adults, I wanted to focus on naturalistic performances that were close to their age. It is common for teenagers to play adults in school or in acting groups, so I wanted to allow them to explore characters a bit closer to home. Creating real characters has been the heart of the rehearsal process, never stereotyping or exaggerating the experience of the girls. I challenged them to really flesh out and create personal backstories to their characters, as well as the relationships between them and the others. I am very impressed with the character nuances that they have all created.

I wrote this play, specifically for this group and they really have worked hard bringing my vision to life. I really hope they have enjoyed the challenge and that you enjoy watching their hard work on display.
