Step into the shadows of the fairy tales you thought you knew. Darker Side of Grimm unearths the macabre origins of classic stories, revealing the greed, hunger, and desperation lurking beneath the surface. Guided by the enigmatic Umbra, the audience is taken on a journey through three eerie tales:
- Hansel and Gretel: A Serpent’s Hunger – Starvation drives two children to desperation, but the sweet refuge they find may prove deadlier than the hunger itself.
- Ashes for Ella – A girl enslaved by her cruel stepfamily finds herself in a high-stakes game of survival, where even a glass slipper comes at a cost.
- The Hare and the Hedgehog – A seemingly harmless race between two creatures takes a dark turn, revealing the deadly consequences of pride and trickery.
Combining physical theatre, haunting storytelling, and striking visuals, Darker Side of Grimm reimagines these beloved tales with a sinister twist. Are you ready to step into the darkness?

The ensemble plays a vital role throughout, transforming into eerie forests, bats, houses, ghostly figures, and manifestations of each tale’s dark themes. This has
been a fun challenge as they have worked on developing their own characters as well as skills in group work and physical theatre. They really enjoyed the mime
activities to develop skills in showing “who”, “what” and “where.” We have also practiced projection, articulation, stage positioning, blocking and using stage
directions. I have really enjoyed getting to know all of the group and I look forward to working with them next term.
I hope you enjoyed the show!
