Set in 1978, False Alarm takes us into a run-down block of flats where the fire alarm blares weekly. The residents have learned to ignore it until one day, they can’t. False Alarm is a gripping and darkly humorous ensemble drama that explores community, survival, and the secrets we try to hide.

At the heart of it all is Mona, an observant and sharp-witted girl who watches the people around her, each with their own struggles, ambitions, and regrets. From an aspiring actress fighting for her big break; an obsessive rule-follower trying to maintain control; a reclusive man haunted by his past; a host of others navigating love, loss, and the chaos of their shared world.

As the fire alarm rings again and again, tensions rise, stories collide, and the truth about these characters comes to light. But who will make it out unscathed?

Last term, I approached the students with this idea of a block of flats, each one with its own secrets. For the first time in a long time, they all were open and up for it. We have spent a long time trying to figure out the characters, what they would say, what secrets they have, and who should make it to the end.

From the storylines to the multi-level stage, the students have really embraced it. They have struggled with learning lines and self-motivation at times. If I’m not focused on their scene at that moment, they have a slight tendency to chat. However, this is a very talented group of students that have taken on a mature show, and I am so impressed with what they have achieved in a small amount of time.

I really hope they have enjoyed the challenge and that you enjoy our play, False Alarm.
